Join us for a fabulous afternoon of wonderful clarinet trios. Just as Brahms was about to retire from composing, he was inspired to write Op. 114 after having heard clarinetist Richard Muhlfeld in 1891. From the opening moments, the trio reveals itself as a deeply expressive journey through a rich tapestry of moods. It seamlessly blends moments of profound darkness with passages of golden lyricism, moving effortlessly between melancholy and warmth. It unfolds like a Classical-Romantic epic, with complex thematic development, dramatic contrasts, and a sense of narrative unfolding across its four movements.
Also on the program is the rarely performed clarinet trio (1973) by Nino Rota, better known for his film scores, such as "The Godfather". Rota's clarinet trio is traditional in its three-movement structure (fast, slow, fast). The first movement combines energetic and driving dialogue between the clarinet and cello, the slow movement is gorgeous and lyrical, and the final movement sounds like it could be a soundtrack for a Fellini film that takes place in a circus!
The performers are Julie Meneghini (clarinet), Dorothy Braker (cello), and Mary Towse-Beck (piano).
The artwork of Kristen Pobatschnig and Reuven Grehan will be on exhibit.
Doors open at 2:30. Tickets are $25, with limited availability.
